The Power of a Breath: How Leadership Coaching Creates Space for Sustainable Leadership
She came into our session already exhausted.
She loved the work she was doing. She believed deeply in the mission and vision of the busy healthcare organization she served. As a leader in healthcare, her role carried meaning, responsibility, and constant demand—and she cared deeply about getting it right.
For months, her workload had been relentless. High volume. Constant urgency. Very little margin. She was working late into the evenings, driven not only by expectations, but by commitment to her team and the organization’s mission. On this particular day, though, something was different.
When I asked where she wanted to begin, she paused. Then paused again.
She couldn’t even find the words.
She wasn’t disengaged. She wasn’t burned out on the mission. She was overwhelmed to the point that her thinking had narrowed—something many leaders experience when responsibility outpaces capacity. There was no space—mentally or emotionally—to sort through priorities or make clear decisions.
So instead of pushing forward, I suggested we pause.
“Would you be open to taking a few slow, deep breaths together?”
She agreed.
We took a brief break—just a few intentional breaths. Nothing elaborate. No fixing. No solving.
Almost immediately, I saw a shift.
Her shoulders softened. Her jaw unclenched. Her breathing slowed. And then, as the tension released, the tears came.
She shared that it had been so long since she had given herself even the space to breathe—truly breathe—that she hadn’t realized how constricted she had become. The tears weren’t about one meeting or one problem. They were a release. A recognition.
In that pause, she understood something important: even work she loved—even leadership roles rooted in purpose—can become unsustainable without space. Passion alone doesn’t protect leaders from overload. Sustainable leadership requires room to think, reflect, and recover.

That moment became a turning point.
Through our leadership coaching work together, she began to make intentional changes. Not all at once, and not without effort. She set clearer boundaries around her workday. She shifted how she led, empowering her team and delegating more effectively rather than carrying everything herself.
The work remained demanding. The mission still mattered deeply. But her leadership became more sustainable.
Her husband noticed the difference before she even named it. She was more present. Less depleted. More grounded.
Every step mattered. Each leadership skill she strengthened made a difference.
But it began with something deceptively simple: a few intentional breaths and the space to be heard.
This is the power of leadership coaching.
Coaching creates space—space to pause, to reflect, to be seen clearly, and to think more expansively than the day-to-day demands of leadership allow. For leaders in healthcare and other high-responsibility roles, that space can be the difference between surviving and leading sustainably.
In that space, insight emerges. Choices become visible. And meaningful, lasting change becomes possible.
If you’re a leader who loves your work but feels constantly “on,” overwhelmed, or mentally stretched thin, leadership coaching isn’t about fixing you—it’s about creating the conditions for clarity, resilience, and effective leadership.
